Update: University Boulevard West Pedestrian-Involved Collision Now Fatal; Identity of Pedestrian Released

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department- Collision Reconstruction Unit continue to investigate the now fatal, pedestrian-involved collision that occurred on Saturday, June 9, on University Boulevard West at Amherst Avenue.

The pedestrian, identified as Edwin Diaz, age 38, of the 10900 block of Inwood Avenue in Silver Spring, has succumbed to his injuries sustained in the collision.

Detectives Investigate Serious Pedestrian-Involved Collision in Wheaton

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department-Collision Reconstruction Unit are investigating a serious, pedestrian-involved collision that occurred early this morning in the Wheaton area.

On Saturday, June 9 at approximately 3:23 a.m., a 4th District officer was driving eastbound University Boulevard West at Amherst Avenue on routine patrol in a marked cruiser. In an adjacent lane, the officer observed a white, 2005 Toyota Camry that appeared to have an object under the vehicle. The officer and the Camry driver made eye contact, and the driver then accelerated her vehicle eastbound on University Boulevard West and drove into the parking lot of a business. The officer observed that the unknown object, which had been dragged by the vehicle and was now lying on the roadway, was a person.

Officers made contact with the driver who was identified as 25-year-old Bianca Paola Machuca of Cedar Street in Hyattsville. Machuca was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol.

The adult male pedestrian, whose identity is not being released until family is notified, was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that the pedestrian was walking east on the eastbound sidewalk of University Boulevard West. In the area of Amherst Avenue, the pedestrian was passing the entrance to a business’ driveway when he was struck by the Camry. The Camry’s direction of travel is still under investigation.

Update: Serious Collision Involving Motorcycle Now Fatal

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department – Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are investigating a now fatal collision involving a motorcyclist that occurred this morning.  The motorcycle operator, identified as James Christopher Davern, age 21, of Silverdale Drive in Silver Spring, succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital this evening.

At approximately 10:46 a.m., 4th District officers and Fire and Rescue personnel responded to Veirs Mill Road at Robindale Drive for the report of a collision involving a vehicle and a motorcycle.

Preliminary investigation has indicated that Davern, operating a 2012 Honda CBR 600 RR motorcycle, was traveling west on Veirs Mill Road.  The driver of a 2003 Honda CRV was traveling east on Veirs Mill Road and was attempting to make a left turn onto Robindale Drive.  The motorcycle and vehicle collided in the intersection.

The driver of the CRV, identified as Whirley Calumba Saguban, age 66, of Robindale Drive in Rockville, was not injured in the collision.

Detectives Investigate Pedestrian Collision on Georgia Avenue at International Drive

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department – Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are investigating a serious collision involving a pedestrian that occurred this afternoon in the 15100 block of Georgia Avenue at International Drive.

On Monday, December 4 at approximately 3:51 p.m., 4th District officers and Fire and Rescue personnel responded to Georgia Avenue at International Drive for the report of a pedestrian- involved collision.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that a 2015 Honda Crosstour, driven by Diriba Worku Yadessa, age 50, of the 2600 block of Winter Morning Way in Olney, was traveling south on Georgia Avenue approaching International Drive.  A pedestrian, identified as Zinash Gedamu, age 68, of the 15000 block of Georgia Avenue, was crossing Georgia Avenue at International Drive an eastern direction (toward the entrance to Leisure World) when for reasons still under investigation, she was struck by the Crosstour.

Gedamu was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
