Detectives Investigate Fatal Pedestrian-Involved Collision in Rockville

Update: August 17, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. – The pedestrian is now being identified as Julio Danery Rodriguez-Gonzalez, age 34, of an unconfirmed address.

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department – Collision Reconstruction Unit are investigating a fatal pedestrian-involved collision that occurred this afternoon in Rockville.

On Thursday, August 16 at approximately 4:01 p.m., 1st District officers, Rockville City Police Department officers, and Fire and Rescue personnel responded to the intersection of Norbeck Road (Route 28) at East Gude Drive for the report of a serious collision involving a pedestrian.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that Rodriguez-Gonzalez was crossing the eastbound lanes of Norbeck Road when for reasons still under investigation, he was struck by a 2016 Jeep Cherokee which was traveling eastbound on Norbeck Road approaching East Gude Drive.

Rodriguez-Gonzalez  was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the Jeep Cherokee, identified as George Mannina Jr., age 68, of the 4100 block of Montpelier Road in Rockville, was not injured in this collision.

Detectives Investigate Fatal Pedestrian-Involved Collision in Wheaton

Update: August 14, 2018 at 2:30 p.m. – The pedestrian is now being identified as Leonel A. Reyes, age 58, of the 14600 block of Glenhaven Drive in Silver Spring.

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department-Collision Reconstruction Unit are investigating a fatal pedestrian-involved collision that occurred last night in the Wheaton area.

On Saturday, August 11, at approximately 11:30 p.m., officers and Fire & Rescue personnel responded to Georgia Avenue at Veirs Mill Road for the report of a collision involving a pedestrian.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Reyes was attempting to cross Georgia Avenue at Veirs Mill Road when he was struck by a 2016 Nissan Rogue that was traveling south on Georgia Avenue. Preliminary investigation revealed that Reyes was not in a crosswalk.  Reyes was declared deceased at the scene.

The 49-year-old male driver, identified as Ramon Sanches of Eccleston Street in Silver Spring, remained at the scene.

Update: Robbery and Assault of Victim Immediately Preceded Hewitt Avenue Fatal Hit and Run; Third Suspect Charged

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department – Major Crimes Division have charged Ashley Elizabeth Bonilla, age 15, of Holdridge Avenue in Silver Spring, as an adult, with the first-degree murder and armed robbery of 40-year-old Gregory Jonathan Atwood of Tynewick Drive in the Bel Pre area.  Bonilla is the third suspect to be charged with offenses related to this crime.

Through investigation, detectives have determined that on June 8 at approximately 3:15 a.m., Mohammed Salous, age 17, of Glenmont Circle in Silver Spring, Kenneth Kpakima (also spelled Kapakima), age 21, of Venice Drive in Silver Spring , and Ashley Bonilla, were walking in the 3300 block of Hewitt Avenue when they encountered Gregory Atwood (the victim).  The three suspects stole the victim’s backpack and assaulted him.  The victim fell backward into a wooded area adjacent to the intersection of Georgia and Hewitt Avenues.  Salous and Kpakima followed the victim into the woods and continued to assault him.  Kpakima stole the victim’s wallet.  The assault was captured on video surveillance with audio.

The three suspects watched the victim crawl out of the woods and toward the 13500 block of Georgia Avenue, enter the roadway, and collapse.  The suspects watched the victim lay motionless on the road and then watched a vehicle run over the victim.  The suspects then fled from the area.

At approximately 3:50 a.m., 4th District officers responded to southbound Georgia Avenue at Hewitt Avenue for the report of a person in the roadway.

The victim’s body was transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office and on July 10, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the State of Maryland ruled the death a homicide.

Detectives previously charged Salous as an adult with assault-related offenses and murder for his involvement in this crime and charged Kpakima with assault and armed robbery offenses related to this crime.  The investigation is continuing.

Collision Reconstruction Unit detectives continue to investigate the hit-and-run element of this investigation.  Their investigation indicates that the victim was struck by at least two separate vehicles. The drivers of those vehicles did not remain on the scene. Detectives request anyone with information regarding the vehicles involved to contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773-6620.

Bonilla will have bond review today in Rockville District Court.

Detectives Investigate Now Fatal Collision Involving Motorcyclist

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department – Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are investigating a now fatal collision involving a motorcyclist that occurred yesterday afternoon.

On Friday, July 27 at approximately 1:35 p.m., 1st District officers and Fire and Rescue personnel responded to Shady Grove Road at Crabbs Branch Way for the report of a collision involving a vehicle and a motorcycle.

Preliminary investigation has indicated that the motorcyclist, operating a 2008 Suzuki 650 motorcycle, was traveling south on Shady Grove Road.  The driver of a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer was traveling north on Shady Grove Road and was attempting to make a left turn onto Crabbs Branch Way.  The motorcycle and vehicle collided in the intersection.

The motorcycle operator, identified as Michael Barchuk, age 55, of Cannon Drive in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.  His condition worsened at the hospital and he succumbed to his injuries yesterday evening.

The driver of the Trailblazer, identified as Eddie Johnson, age 30, of Lockwood Drive in Silver Spring, was not injured in the collision.

Detectives Investigate Fatal Pedestrian-Involved Collision in Parking Lot

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department- Collision Reconstruction Unit are investigating a fatal pedestrian-involved collision that occurred this morning in Boyds.

On Sunday, July 15, at approximately 8:48 a.m., 5th District officers and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue personnel responded to the parking lot of St Mark’s United Methodist Church located at 19620 White Ground Road for the report of a collision.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that Kathleen Virginia Howard, age 83, of Clovercrest Circle in Olney, had exited her 2006 Lexus RX 330 in the church parking lot.  Her vehicle rolled backward and she was struck.  Detectives are still investigating where Howard was in relation to the vehicle when she was struck.

Howard was transported to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.
