Fraud Suspect Purchases Items Totaling $9,800 with Victims’ Stolen Credit Cards; Residents Reminded to Keep Purses and Wallets Close at All Times

Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 4th District Patrol Investigations Unit have charged Amir Holmes (also known as Amir Hunter), age 52, of the 1700 block of E. Street in Northeast, Washington, D.C., with multiple counts of theft and credit card fraud-related offenses.  Holmes stole wallets and credit cards from approximately six victims who left their purses unattended while shopping at a store in Wheaton.  Holmes then fraudulently used the stolen credit cards to purchase merchandise at various retail stores in Wheaton. Investigators believe that Holmes committed these thefts on various dates between early May and the end of July.

On May 8, 2019, detectives began investigating a series of wallet thefts that occurred inside the Costco Wholesale store located at 11160 Veirs Mill Road in Wheaton.  During the investigation, detectives identified Holmes as the suspect who, from May through July, fraudulently purchased approximately $9,800 worth of merchandise on six victims’ stolen credit cards.

On Thursday, August 8, investigators obtained a Montgomery County arrest warrant for Holmes.

Holmes was arrested on August 14 in Washington, D.C., on the strength of the Montgomery County arrest warrant.

Holmes remains incarcerated in Washington, D.C., pending extradition to Montgomery County.  At this time, a mugshot for Holmes is not available.
