Update: Two Suspects Charged After Discharging a Firearm in Downtown Silver Spring; Tipster Helped Close This Case

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department – 3rd District Investigative Section have arrested and charged Ruben Elias Gilbert, age 25, of the 500 block of Thayer Avenue in Silver Spring, and Eric Antonio Alarcon-Ozoria, age 26, of the 9300 block of Edmonston Road in Greenbelt, with assault and firearm-related charges for their involvement in discharging a firearm on June 9 in the Central Business District of Silver Spring.  No victims were reported to have been struck by the gunfire.

On June 9, at approximately 1:13 a.m., 3rd District officers responded to the 8200 block of Georgia Avenue for the multiple reports of the sounds of shots. Responding officers spoke with several witnesses who stated that they had observed two suspects, one of whom was wearing a white shirt and armed with a handgun, chasing a male on Mayor Lane toward Silver Spring Avenue.  The suspect with the handgun fired multiple rounds at the fleeing male.  Officers located two spent shell casings in the area but were unable to locate or identify the male victim.

On July 30, detectives released surveillance video of the suspects to the media and public and asked for help in identifying them.  Investigators received a tip which led to the identification of Gilbert as one of the suspects.  Detectives identified Alarcon-Ozoria as the suspect who fired the handgun.

Alarcon-Ozoria was arrested on December 20 on the strength of a Montgomery County arrest warrant and is being held without bond.

Gilbert was arrested on December 23 on the strength of a Montgomery County arrest warrant.  He was released after posting a $20,000 bond.
