Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department continue to investigate the assault by vehicle of an off-duty Montgomery County police officer that occurred yesterday evening in the shopping district of Chevy Chase. The officer was working secondary employment and was in full uniform.
Yesterday at approximately 4:50 p.m., an off-duty Montgomery County police officer was working as a security employee for shops in that area. The officer was parked in his marked cruiser in the shopping complex when a security guard from one of the stores notified him that another person had expressed concern over a suspicious Acura parked on South Park Avenue.
The officer located the silver Acura parked on South Park Avenue just prior to Wisconsin Avenue with one occupant in the vehicle (the driver). The officer believed that the vehicle was not parked in a legal parking spot and believed the tags to be improperly displayed. The officer observed the vehicle drive toward the traffic light at Wisconsin Avenue and stop at the red light to turn south (make a left turn) onto Wisconsin Avenue.
The officer then approached the driver’s window of the vehicle and placed his hand on the roof line. The driver of the vehicle made eye contact with the officer and turned the vehicle wheel toward the officer. The driver then accelerated and struck the officer. The officer’s hand become stuck on the vehicle and he fell on the roadway as the vehicle sped off. The officer was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries as was released late last night. He suffered contusions to his arms and legs and also a concussion.
The vehicle was located unoccupied this morning in NE Washington, D.C., by the Metropolitan Police Department, who had received a call for a suspicious vehicle. Investigation by detectives continues at this time.
The involved officer is 30-years-old and an approximately eight year veteran of the Department.
