Detectives from the Montgomery County Police – Financial Crimes Section have been investigating a mail theft and check fraud incident that occurred in August 2013.
On August 9, 2013, officers responded to the 20200 block of Darlington Drive in Gaithersburg for a report of check fraud. Investigation revealed that the victim had written two checks to the Maryland Prepaid College Fund in the amount of over $80,000. The checks were placed in the victim’s mailbox from which they were stolen. The victim was later notified that the checks had not reached the college fund company.
Further investigation by detectives determined that the checks had been deposited into a fake bank account, in the name of Maryland College Fund, that had been established by the suspects. The suspects then withdrew the funds from the account.
Detectives were able to obtain surveillance photos of the suspects from the bank at which the checks were deposited.
Today, detectives are releasing these photos and asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the suspects. Anyone with information regarding the identity of the suspect is asked to contact the Financial Crimes Section at 240-773-6330.
